Rae Got Some New Sonic Stuff

Well, well, well... Today was my fourth annual trip to Comic Con. Quite a tiring one at that, and surprisingly stocked with overpriced new merchandise that would make you drool and have a heart attack after you see some of those prices.

Luckily, I was able to procure a few notable and reasonably priced items to further increase my collection.

#1. Jazwares Exclusive Urban Vinyl Metal Sonic Figure. This really is a gem. It was sold only during the convention, and was available online at Toys R Us during this weekend only. Metallic paint finish all around, and adorably sculpted in surprising detail. He even has the exhaust intake in the back! He's going to be a display figure more than a toy for me, since I can't do much with him, but he's articulated at the neck, arms, and waist. That means he's a bit posable!

#2. 2 Issues I was missing. The one on the left is an important part to the recent storyline, as the start of Eggman's recent invasion of Knothole, 25 issues before he has a mental breakdown. The one on the right is the "final" portion of "Mobius: 25 Years Later", but due to popularity, a two issue "Aftermath" set in a whacked future where Shadow is king (Pretty sweet looking threads too. The cloak was a pretty nice touch to the crown.), and in Sonic Universe, that storyline will be continued. Pretty kickbutt future look on things. Signed... as always ^^

#3. Ohmigod! Ohmigod! Is this thing for real?! A Silver the Hedgehog Official Plush Toy?! Why, yes... it is. It seems like he made it past the prototype stage with Kellytoy, and was available in two sizes that I saw.

But... there's something amiss about him. The entire plush is actually silver tone in the fabric. Now, given the other details that are really well paid attention to about this plush, there is no way that it was miscommunication with the company between them and Sega, since Silver is almost all on par for the rest of him. The shoes are even the right colors, and his hands have the psychokinetic markings on both sides. The eyes are embroidered and the body is well stuffed, leaving no wrinkly and shrively arms and legs. The quills are accurate to... back quills even, and his tail is proportionate and stands out as well. So I know the coloring can't be an error that's because they never really heard of him. To make is a bit more confusing, the tag lists him as "Silver Sonic", which is the name for Metal Sonic's prototype, and not Silver himself. And really, my biggest peeve about this is that the chest fluff is a scrap of felt and Shadow Style... not the large patch that hangs over his shoulders in the game... but then again, when you thing about it, such a feature would be hard to adapt unless they made the fluff from faux fur, which can be questionable in durability at times.

But, for this being his first official merchandise outside of comics and games, it's by far the most impressive start for a character I've seen. But a little late on the update, since Silver's been here since 2006. By that reasoning... I think we are far overdue for a Blaze item, and I'm still hoping an obscure Mephiles one is in the works. I mean... Werehog already has a prototype! And I've seen images of a Chip themed toy that has yet to be confirmed as a full blown project. And Metal has been getting some lovely publicity in light of his new appearances in those new games, and the toys that are coming out... so something big might be planned with him soon.

The appearance of the Silver plush also tells me that even though he's been absent from the games for a while now, at least he's still got hope, since his plush was nearly sold out over there. Sega might really be planning to make that Silver solo game that we've heard rumors about. I'd look forward to that, since the only game I have playable with him is Next Gen, and I get to see him and Blaze cameo in Sega Superstars Tennis, where the ball can veer off and hit them.

Anyway... this plush is a decent size too. 19 inches long from toe to tip of quill. The bigger size that was available is a more life size one that stands a little over three feet.

Maybe the silver fabric is part of a ploy to make this "exclusive", where they "realize the mistake" and start producing white fabric ones, and thus claiming that the silver tone Silvers are "misprints" and therefore worth more in collectability. Clever if they do...

I'd recommend this if you if you love Silver, need a new spring in your collection, or you just like to deviate from the same old same old in the collectibles. This is actually quite enjoyable.

#5. To further my Sonic X Keychain Collection, I have finally procured a Knuckles keychain. A tough little bugger to find, nearly as scarce as Tails. I found him among a bunch of Koopas, Goombas, and Wii Remote laser lights.
